Article: State budget fight has schools bracing; Most districts are developing {ldquo}worst-case scenario{rdquo} forecasts for their finances

As state Republican lawmakers and Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle pump up the volume over their dueling property tax freeze proposals, school districts in Ozaukee and Washington counties are having trouble discerning just how their budgets would be affected in the fall.

Should they be planning for drastic cuts including laying off teachers and slicing programs? Or should they expect to increase their revenue by $248 per student, the amount allowed under current law?

Doyle says that under the GOP plan, school districts in the two counties would face potential revenue losses totaling nearly $23.8 million over the next two years.
