Article: Study breaks down jail population; Data requested before expansion plans concluded

Most of the inmates who spent time in the crowded Racine County Jail in 2004 were in jail for misdemeanor crimes, and only 1 in 5 was serving time for a more serious felony case, according to a study released Tuesday.

The study also shows the average length of stay in the jail was highest for those charged with felonies, at 83 days, compared with 21 days for misdemeanor offenses.

The study came at the request of residents and Racine County supervisors who said they wanted to see an analysis of the jail population before planning is completed on a possible multimillion- dollar addition to the jail to ease crowding.
