Madison Wisconsin's record high gas prices will be nudged
slightly higher Friday, when the annual spring increase in the state
gas tax raises that levy 0.8 cents per gallon to a record 29.9 cents
per gallon.
The 0.8-cent tax increase will cost drivers an estimated $26
million more a year, according to the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal
Bureau.
The gas tax will bring in about $1 billion a year, including
Friday's scheduled increase. It and the annual $55 per-car
registration fee account for most of the state's income for
transportation programs cash desperately needed to pay for statewide
highway programs and special projects such as rebuilding Milwaukee's
Marquette Interchange.
