Article: Attanasio moved up quickly from being a long shot; His persistence, networking gave him an edge in bid

In the fall of 2003, Peter Mahler, the president of Mahler Enterprises in Milwaukee, was talking on the phone with his friend, Mark L. Attanasio.

"Peter was in a stream of consciousness mood," Attanasio recalled. "He was asking me one of those, Did you ever think about doing anything else with your life' kind of questions. I was trying to get back to work.

"I told him the truth: What I would really like to do is own a baseball team. I thought that would end the discussion."

Mahler, who knew Wendy Selig-Prieb, then chairman of the team's board of directors, said he thought he could be helpful on that score. "Would you consider investing in the Brewers?" Attanasio said Mahler asked.
