Article: Publisher tightens standards amid circulation decline; Journal Sentinel among many newspapers facing tough competition from Internet

Last month's shakeup in the circulation department of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel comes as newspapers face heightened scrutiny from advertisers and stiffening competition in the battle for customers.

The paper's first major change since Elizabeth "Betsy" Brenner took over as publisher in January unfolded on March 17 when Brenner announced that Mark Thomas, formerly senior vice president for circulation; Thomas Pierce, formerly vice president for marketing services; and Deb Jubera, formerly director of consumer marketing and sales, were "no longer with the Journal Sentinel."
