Article: Rising diesel costs could fuel bus fare increase, route cuts; Waukesha Metro Transit to hold 2 public hearings

Rising fuel costs and cuts in state aid have led Waukesha Metro Transit officials to propose service cuts in Waukesha and Menomonee Falls and raise fares for nearly all city and county bus routes.

"Diesel fuel a year ago cost about 60 cents a gallon," Transit Director Robert Johnson said. "Last week, we paid $1.75 a gallon, buying it in bulk. That's nearly triple the price."

Two public hearings on fare increases and route cuts will be held next week.

The Waukesha Common Council must approve the proposed changes, which have already been approved by the Waukesha Transit Commission Board.
