Washington State is rapidly gaining recognition as an
important source for Merlot, but consumers should know that it also
produces a full range of excellent reds and whites at very fair
prices.
Red wines benefit from the cool temperatures of eastern
Washington's nights, which preserve acidity levels that lend
brightness and refinement. Aside from Merlot (profiled in this
column two weeks ago), Cabernet Sauvignon is by far the most
important varietal, with Cabernet Franc and Syrah gradually gaining
in prominence.
White wines were long considered Washington's strength, due to
growing conditions and northerly latitudes that suggested parallels
to northern European regions. How I find ...
