Article: Alderman indicted in fraud case; Donovan hid ties with agency that received $200,000 grant, prosecutors say

Milwaukee Ald. Bob Donovan was indicted Wednesday on a federal charge of defrauding the government in connection with federal money that went to an organization he founded, bringing a new stain of scandal to City Hall.

The charge alleges that Donovan failed to disclose his financial ties with the Milwaukee Alliance, a non-profit group that he founded after being elected to the Common Council in 2000. The group later received $200,000 in block grant funds through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Mayor Tom Barrett said Wednesday he had directed that funding for the alliance be suspended immediately.
