Milwaukee Ald. Bob Donovan was indicted Wednesday on a federal
charge of defrauding the government in connection with federal money
that went to an organization he founded, bringing a new stain of
scandal to City Hall.
The charge alleges that Donovan failed to disclose his financial
ties with the Milwaukee Alliance, a non-profit group that he founded
after being elected to the Common Council in 2000. The group later
received $200,000 in block grant funds through the U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development.
Mayor Tom Barrett said Wednesday he had directed that funding for
the alliance be suspended immediately.
Donovan, 49, is the fourth Milwaukee alderman indicted on federal
