Article: Little heat in Cold Case story

The good news is that Stacy Horn has done exactly what she set out to do provide a behind-the-scenes look at New York City's Cold Case squad.

The bad news, as she notes, is that "much of a Cold Case detective's time is spent sitting around," and it's very hard to make a book about sitting around interesting.

Moreover, she follows several cases, skipping around between them, interspersing information about the history of police labs, (eight pages alone on the booking process, the events that transpire after an alleged criminal is arrested) so it's often difficult to keep track of all the names and all that occurred several chapters before.
