The archery deer hunting season opened Saturday with expectations
a little lower than last year, when bowhunters registered a record
103,572 deer.
"Based on the fact that there is not Earn-a-Buck in place, fewer
units in Zone T and slightly fewer deer out there, it doesn't seem
like archers will set a record this year," said Keith Warnke, big
game ecologist with the Department of Natural Resources in Madison.
"I hope they do. It would be great if they do."
Going into the hunt, wildlife managers project that the state's
whitetail deer population is at about 1.4 million to 1.5 million,
down from 1.7 million last year.
