A Cedar Grove-area man died Friday in a vain attempt to save his 10-year-old daughter after she broke through thin ice while skating on a pond in the village.

The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department said Brian J. Obbink, 44, tried to rescue his daughter Megan after the girl fell through the ice on a municipal storm water pond near the intersection of state Highway 32 and County Highway G. The two were skating on the pond with Brian Obbink's 6-year-old daughter when the accident was reported shortly after 11:30 a.m., the sheriff's department said.
