Article: NL CY YOUNG AWARD; Carpenter nails it down; Cardinals' ace nips Florida's Willis

St. Louis right-hander Chris Carpenter, who two years ago thought his major-league career was finished, received the ultimate validation Thursday that he was all the way back.

Carpenter was named the winner of the National League Cy Young Award for 2005, topping Florida left-hander Dontrelle Willis in a close vote. The Cardinals' ace received 19 of 32 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers Association of America and finished with 132 points, 20 more than Willis, who garnered 11 firsts.

Houston's Roger Clemens, the only other pitcher named on every ballot, was a distant third with two first-place votes and 40 points.
