The first order of business when Gov. Jim Doyle departs next week on a European trade mission is to reinvigorate a three-decade-old alliance with the pivotal German state of Hessen.

It's little surprise that Germany is emerging as a central focus of the three-nation, 10-day foreign trade tour that also crisscrosses the Czech Republic and Poland two fast-growing former Soviet economies that recently joined the European Union.

The heavily industrial German economy, after all, bears an uncanny resemblance to the industrial profile of the American Midwest.
