The first order of business when Gov. Jim Doyle departs next week
on a European trade mission is to reinvigorate a three-decade-old
alliance with the pivotal German state of Hessen.
It's little surprise that Germany is emerging as a central focus
of the three-nation, 10-day foreign trade tour that also crisscrosses
the Czech Republic and Poland two fast-growing former Soviet
economies that recently joined the European Union.
The heavily industrial German economy, after all, bears an uncanny
resemblance to the industrial profile of the American Midwest.
Wisconsin also has a greater concentration of German ethnic
heritage 43% of its population trace back to Germany, according to
