If you turn a clich on its head, do you get a whole new clich?
I'm asking because, 50 years after the 1950s vision of suburbia as
a little bit of heaven on Earth, we're up to our ears in depictions
of those same pretty houses and green lawns as breeding grounds for
desperate housewives, drug-dealing moms and all manner of domestic
dysfunction.
Take the print ads for CBS' newest drama, featuring star Jennifer
Finnigan ("Committed," "Crossing Jordan") in front of a clothesline
hung with a bloodstained T-shirt.
"Prosecutor Annabeth Chase," the copy fairly snarls, "has
discovered crime has a new address: Close to Home.' " In other words,
