The next generation in home entertainment begins this week with the release of Microsoft's Xbox 360, the most powerful and versatile videogame system yet.

It's not quite a computer, but it's close, combining games, digital music and photos with online features such as voice chat, downloadable games and e-commerce.

The Xbox 360, which goes on sale Tuesday, also combines popular living room technology, such as playing DVDs, with more developing technologies, such as high-definition TV. And the video games look more lifelike than ever, ranging from sweat glistening on the brow of a virtual Brett Favre to a nearly perfect digital re-creation of Tiger Woods' golf swing.
