Article: 2005 GIVING GUIDE; WISCONSIN HUMANE SOCIETY; An owl, lots of kitties and more

Hundreds of animals and humans pass through the Wisconsin Humane Society each day.

On this day, during a couple of hours in the afternoon:

A great horned owl ate lunch. Found listlessly sitting on a stump a week earlier, it didn't have much of an appetite, possibly because of West Nile virus. So while someone holds the owl's beak and pulls back its head, Kristen Puzach snakes a tube into its mouth and down to its stomach before pushing a plunger filled with baby food. The owl chitters, closes and opens both of its eyelids and then becomes quiet as soon as the tube is pulled out.

The tiny hearts of seven kittens thump through the stethoscope
