Hundreds of animals and humans pass through the Wisconsin Humane
Society each day.
On this day, during a couple of hours in the afternoon:
A great horned owl ate lunch. Found listlessly sitting on a stump
a week earlier, it didn't have much of an appetite, possibly because
of West Nile virus. So while someone holds the owl's beak and pulls
back its head, Kristen Puzach snakes a tube into its mouth and down
to its stomach before pushing a plunger filled with baby food. The
owl chitters, closes and opens both of its eyelids and then becomes
quiet as soon as the tube is pulled out.
