Chicago Phil Garner laughs when it's suggested that he manages
most of the time by the seat of his pants.
"Everything we do is calculated, and has a reason behind it," said
Garner, whose Houston Astros open their first World Series tonight
against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
"I'm not even sure what managing by the seat of your pants means."
Call it what you like, but Garner is not adverse to going against
the grain at times, or using his gut feeling to make decisions in the
crunch. But when things turn out his way, he is quick to point out
that the players make the difference.
