Hutu rebels killed nine Roman Catholic nuns at a convent in
Rwanda's troubled northwest province, local government officials
said today.
The nuns -- three Rwandan Tutsis, three Rwandan Hutus and
three from neighboring Congo -- were killed Thursday by attackers
armed with guns, machetes and axes, the officials told the
Independent Rwanda News Agency.
The rebels "first encircled the church of the nuns before
breaking into their homes and massacring them," said an official,
who declined to be named. The nuns were killed at the village of
Rwerere on Rwanda's border with Congo, formerly called Zaire.
