David Mallett's new live album, "Parallel Lives," is his first
since moving back to his family homestead in Maine after a 10-year
sojourn in Nashville, and the album's liner notes include a parting
shot at Music City. The truth, though, is that Nashville was very
good for Mallett; he landed some album cuts (by the likes of Hal
Ketchum and Kathy Mattea) and saw his formerly sentimental,
amorphous folk music acquire a welcome clarity and rhythmic focus.
In fact, three of the best songs on "Parallel Lives" ("Like This,"
"Daddy's Oldsmobile" and the previously unreleased "Closer to
Truth") were co-written with Nashville songwriters Ketchum and Lance
Cowan.
