Unable to take advantage of the second life provided the previous evening by another country's victory, Team USA meekly bowed out of the World Baseball Classic with a 2-1 loss to Mexico Thursday evening before a bipartisan crowd of 38,284 at Angel Stadium.

The loss dropped Team USA to 1-2 in the second round, creating a three-way tie with Japan and Mexico behind first-place Korea (3-0). Using the tie-breaker of fewest runs allowed divided by innings played in the field, Japan advanced to the semifinals ahead of Team USA by a margin of two-thirds of an inning.
