It's the granddaddy of high school dances, the crown jewel in any proper American high school career. This is the weighty legacy of prom and if you listen closely, yes, there it is, the great whooshing sound of cash making a fast exit from the family budget.

By most accounts, a couple attending prom spends an average of $1,000, with annual spending on prom in the billions anywhere from $2.7 billion to $4 billion.
