Career Youth Development's Survivors of Homicide support group,
largely operated in the past by volunteers, received a financial
boost Tuesday a $40,000 state grant aimed at reducing crime in the
central city.
The support group, which began in 1984 but has continued as part
of the agency's Victory over Violence initiative, has never been able
to qualify for state or federal funding in the past.
But state Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager, who announced the
grant Tuesday at the agency, said the support group is not only a
novel program for Milwaukee's neighborhoods, it's centrally located
and within reach of the people it serves.
