It started out as a routine facade inspection. But as workers
removed a few bricks to get a look at conditions underneath the skin
of an old office and retail building at 2266 N. Prospect Ave., they
made a startling discovery: a beautiful terra cotta frieze.
Hidden for at least 50 years, the creamy white frieze spans most
of the second-story facades on Prospect and North avenues. It
incorporates swooping arches, now truncated, along with male faces,
rosettes, medallions and other neo-Gothic ornament.
"You peel back the cocoon and out comes the butterfly," said Ross
