About 150 Americans will die today of colon cancer -- one of
the most treatable of cancers.
Treatable, that is, if caught early. If not, it can be lethal.
Colon cancer kills more Americans than any other cancer except lung.
Newly revised national guidelines aim to cut that death toll
in half over the next decade. Taking advantage of a biological quirk
of colon cancer -- it usually begins as a benign removable polyp --
health officials call for periodic testing of more than 70 million
Americans, including all those over 50.
Such screening "would reduce the colon cancer death rate by 50
percent and save 25,000 lives a year," said John H. Bond, chief of
