Article: CALIFORNIA VS. WISCONSIN, ROUND 2; But Cheetos aren't cheese

California is about to overtake Wisconsin in making cheese. Or so reports the venerable and generally reliable New York Times.

We don't doubt the basic facts of the Sept. 30 article. Wisconsin produced 2.4 billion pounds of cheese last year. California produced 2.14 billion. It's not unreasonable to conclude that, given California's cheese-making pace tripling the amount made over the past 15 years that the state will soon pull ahead of Wisconsin.

In quantity.

Quality that's an entirely different matter. Cheetos don't count as cheese. Which is why we take issue with only one word in The Times article's headline, "Wisconsin's crown of cheese is within California's reach." And that word is ...
