Dutch small shareholder group VEB today said that it had lodged a criminal complaint against ABN Amro, the bank at the centre of a Pounds 50 billion takeover battle. It told the Dutch state prosecutor that it believes ABN has violated the country's market- abuse laws by leaking price-sensitive information to the media.

Austria's Weinberger upped its bid for Baggeridge Brick from 216p a share to 220p a share and immediately rival brickmaker Michelmersh, which has built up a 17% stake in Baggeridge, said it was still pondering a counterbid of its own .

It pointed out that Baggeridge's first-half profits had more than doubled.
