Article: STATISTICS SHOW 1-YEAR DECLINE Fewer state children in poverty But ranks of youngsters near the poverty level may be growing

An estimated 35,000 Wisconsin children climbed out of poverty in 1994, the latest year for which statistics are available, according to figures reported Thursday by the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families.

The statistics also indicate that the ranks of near-poor children in the state may be growing and that few of the children escaping poverty are likely to be African-American, according to Nan Brien, associate director of the council.

The state's overall child-poverty picture appears to be rosier than the national picture painted Thursday in Washington, when the Children's Defense Fund released its annual report on "The State of America's Children Yearbook, 1996."
