COMPANY: New Glarus Brewing Co. is a microbrewer that specializes in European-style beers. Deborah and Dan Carey are the founders. SALES: Projected to brew 6,000 barrels of beer in 1996, up from 4,000 barrels in 1995. The brewery brewed 2,700 barrels in 1994. HISTORY: Brewery was founded by Careys in July 1993. It brewed its first bottle of beer on Nov. 18, 1993. After having its beer on draft during its first year, the brewery's beers can now be found all over southern Wisconsin. The Beverage Testing Institute named the brewery one of the 10 Best, from among 300 breweries in the world. New Glarus' Belgian Red was recently named world champion at the World Beer Championship in Chicago. OWNERS: Deborah Carey, 35, previously owned her own marketing firm and renovated old homes. Dan Carey, 35, was formerly a brewing supervisor for Anheuser-Busch Co. He also built brewing equipment for the Portland, Ore.-based J.V. Northwest Co. He attended the Siebel Institute of Brewing Studies in Chicago. He passed the Master Brewer's Exam at the Institute of Brewing in London in 1992, the first American to do so since 1978. OPERATIONS: The brewery is at State Highway 69 and County Road W, in New Glarus. The brewery employees four full-time and three part-time workers.

Timing has been everything to Deborah and Dan Carey.

Timing was the reason Dan Carey left a six-figure job at the No. 1 brewer in the nation, Anheuser-Busch Cos.

It was the reason the couple started their microbrewery in New Glarus and not elsewhere in the state.

It was why they were able to buy brewery equipment at a foreclosure sale.

And it played a role in the couple's acquisition of the 10,000-square-foot building where the brewery is housed.

"Things have really fallen into place for us," said Deborah Carey, 35. "I'm not a real religious person, but I do believe something was working in our favor."
