Article: From the ground up Construction of Wisconsin Center finally gets rolling

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Wisconsin Center went off without a hitch Wednesday, but there remains the possibility of a major delay in building the $170 million convention center.

The groundbreaking occurred on the site of the convention center's first phase two blocks bordered by W. Wells St., W. Wisconsin Ave., N. 4th St. and N. 6th St. Wisconsin Center President Geoffrey Hurtado told about 700 people who attended the ceremony that the Wisconsin Center was years in the making.

"And that dream almost died a number of times," Hurtado said. He specifically cited developer Gary Grunau and financier Sheldon Lubar for helping keep the plans alive.
