Mandy Patinkin doesn't deliver a line of dialogue or a bar of song
like anyone else. In his solo concerts, he certainly doesn't dress
like anyone else.
A costume change, Patinkin-style, means shedding one pair of black
jeans, one pair of New Balance running shoes and one black T-shirt
and putting on more of the same. Every gig, every city, every
night.
The singer estimates that his current black-T inventory approaches
50: a dozen with the price tags still on, a dozen in peak stage
condition, a dozen "that aren't very black anymore, so I wear them
around the house," and a dozen that time and grime have consigned to
the broom closet.
