A giant ball of flame billowed into the darkened Weyauwega sky
late Sunday night as the last two derailed propane cars were burned
off by a nationally known explosives expert.
"What you get if everything goes off perfectly is a pit of burning
flame," said 2nd Lt. Gary Thompson, a spokesman for the Wisconsin
National Guard. "And if it happens at night it forms a very
beautiful glow over the city of Weyauwega.
"The fire trucks started blowing their horns, and everyone started
cheering. It was a moment of great exuberance," he said.
The extremely dangerous operation was set in motion after the
propane-draining procedure hit a snag Sunday morning and work crews
had to scramble for safety. ...
