While Miami endured many turbulent times during the last quarter
century, Don Shula was more than a professional football coach.
His Rushmore visage, family values, religious devotion, season of
perfection and stern-but-compassionate coaching style connected
Miamians with a more stable, reassuring time.
And word of Shula's resignation as Miami Dolphins coach shook
many across this town.
To blue-collar football fan Don Croswell, Shula was a "father
figure to the people and the sport of football."
To retired Miami media executive and civic leader Alvah Chapman
