Article: Lunar will spin off Bone Care operation

Lunar Corp. will spin off its Bone Care International unit to shareholders within several months, a move an executive said Wednesday would help focus both companies.

The spinoff will occur just as Bone Care begins an expensive, two-year series of tests on its vitamin D compounds for treating osteoporosis and other diseases. The main business of Madison-based Lunar is the production of machines that detect osteoporosis.

"You really have two different businesses," said Robert A. Beckman, vice president of finance for Lunar.

Lunar shareholders are focused mainly on quarterly earnings, Beckman said, and the clinical tests to be done by Bone Care would be "a drag on Lunar's earnings over the next ...
