Village Board members voted Monday to accept the resignations of
the village's Police Committee, as they agreed to continue discussing
how they are going to select their next police chief.
Chief John Haug has decided to retire effective Feb. 29.
The dispute with the Police Committee and the Village Board arose
over whether the board or the committee has the authority to hire a
chief.
One part of the village code gives the authority to the committee,
while another part gives the authority to the Village Board. An
ordinance pending before the board would clarify the conflicting
provisions and cede power to the Village Board.
