Stocking up and hunkering down are normal parts of life around
here in January.
A few miles south of the Red Cliff Indian reservation, the
Madeline Island Ferry recently gave up bashing its way back and
forth through the toughening ice and shut down for the winter,
leaving the island's handful of year-round residents to go it alone
for a while.
Braced for a different kind of siege heavy cuts in federal
spending residents of the Red Cliff reservation anxiously await the
outcome of the budget battles in Washington.
Tribal leaders on a reservation where more than half of the
households have an income of less than $20,000 say they fear
politicians are on the verge of doing them far ...
