As the nation's one-track mind focuses on a football game,
citizens feverishly contemplate their wagers.
"If they only make one bet a year, it will be on the Super Bowl,"
said Art Manteris, vice president of race and sports operations at
the Las Vegas Hilton.
What do New Year's Eve and the Super Bowl have in common besides
bright promise and drunken excess?
Amateur partygoers and casual bettors sometimes getting in over
their heads.
"The Super Bowl is a different type of animal," said Jimmy
Vaccaro, race-sports director at The Mirage in Las Vegas. "It's
booked different and it's bet different."
