Remember when you could count the number of sport-utility models on one hand?

By the year 2000, industry watchers say, car buyers could be bombarded with as many as 35 offerings, up from 22 in 1995 and just 14 in 1987.

For buyers, the bumper-to-bumper competition will mean lower prices on some models.

But for manufacturers, a donnybrook looms. Both U.S. and foreign carmakers will be warring to hold on to slices of the market or attract first-time buyers, so hefty rebates can be expected down the road.
