Efforts to reform teacher discipline at Milwaukee Public Schools
are on the slow track, despite a promised push on the issue last
fall.
MPS has not yet proposed any legislative changes on teacher
discipline; a peer evaluation idea remains bogged in contract
negotiations; and the administration has sent mixed signals on
disciplining teachers.
MPS officials and some community reform advocates said MPS'
commitment to pursuing discipline reforms was genuine. But the issue
has taken second place to the battles over reorganizing failing
schools and attempts to establish charter schools free of many union
and state constraints.
