Article: House aims at end to gun ban Despite vote to repeal, assault weapons law is safe for now

After an acrimonious debate on an issue that many legislators would just as soon avoid, the House voted Friday to repeal a 2-year-old ban on the sale of semiautomatic assault weapons.

The vote was more symbolism than substance, since there is no chance that the gun ban will be repealed this year.

Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole of Kansas, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, told reporters Friday he doesn't think the bill will get to a vote this year on the Senate floor, where Democrats have threatened a filibuster. Even if the measure clears the Senate, it would be vetoed by President Clinton, who fought hard in 1994 to get the assault weapons ban through Congress.
