Before the state implements a program that allows welfare benefits
to be cashed at automated teller machines, state officials should
make sure recipients can't cash their benefits at Indian casinos,
Rep. Frank Lasee (R-Town of Ledgeview) said Tuesday.
Lasee said a recent Reader's Digest article reported that Ramsey
and Hennepin counties in Minnesota found that in a typical month,
about $39,000 in benefits were cashed at ATMs at Indian casinos.
Before Wisconsin implements an electronic benefits transfer
program, Lasee said, the Legislature needs to conduct a study to
develop measures to prevent welfare recipients from cashing their
benefits at casinos and gambling away money needed for food ...
