After a search that had media circles talking for months, Michael
Kelly, a writer and editor at The New Yorker and a former reporter
for The New York Times, has been named editor of The New Republic.
Kelly, 39, succeeds Andrew Sullivan, who announced that he was
leaving in April.
"Michael has the imagination and gifts of a natural editor," said
Martin Peretz, the editor in chief and chairman of the magazine. "He
is tough-minded and gentle-hearted."
Kelly, who covered the Persian Gulf War for The New Republic, said
he would stay on at The New Yorker through the presidential election,
