Many fresh herbs are available today in supermarkets, and
specialty markets often will special-order more unusual varieties.
However, those little packets of a handful of leaves can set you back
a couple of dollars.
Why spend so much when you can grow them yourself for so little?
Following are some tips on herb gardening:
Getting started: If you've never grown herbs before, start with
easy-to-grow varieties, such as basil, thyme and rosemary, advises
Sylvia Thompson, author of "The Kitchen Garden" (Bantam, $27.95).
Thompson says all three can be grown together in a 10-inch pot
outside or on the porch. The basil will go to seed by the end of the
summer, she says, but the thyme and rosemary ...
