Mayor James Moriarty accused three aldermen Tuesday of trying to strip away his powers and turn him into a ceremonial figurehead.

The aldermen strongly denied the mayor's charges and called his comments regrettable.

Referring to proposed ordinance changes that would take away the mayor's ability to appoint committee members and vote on the Plan Commission, Moriarty said:

"You folks have an agenda, and that is to leave the city of Mequon without a mayor. Rather than keep it as a hidden agenda, let's be honest about it."
