Rev. Dennis Jacobsen recently challenged auto insurance companies
to find a solution to the higher cost of auto insurance in inner city
Milwaukee neighborhoods than elsewhere throughout the state {In My
Opinion, April 17}. Jacobsen correctly pointed out that automobile
insurance costs more for urban dwellers than those living in the
suburbs, smaller towns or on the farm.
The disparity in the cost of auto insurance is not news. At the
heart of insurance pricing is risk evaluation. Smokers pay more for
insurance than non-smokers. Sky divers pay more for life insurance
than couch potatoes. People who own dogs that bite people pay more
