Tourists spent an estimated $6.1 billion in Wisconsin in 1995, up 6.5% from the previous year, a Department of Tourism economic impact report released today showed.

State Tourism Secretary Richard "Moose" Speros said the increase was "extremely encouraging" and he expects Wisconsin tourism to continue growing. The announcement helped kick off Wisconsin's celebration of National Tourism Week.

The added income created nearly 165,000 jobs last year and $1 billion in state and local government revenues, as 70 of the 72 counties experienced growth in tourism.
