It has taken decades to accomplish, but officials are celebrating
the return of self-sustaining lake trout to most of Lake Superior's
icy waters.
"We are celebrating a milestone," said Tom Busiahn, a fisheries
biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Ashland.
"Most parts of the lake will no longer be stocked with lake trout.
That is significant. Stocking has been going on for 40 years. The
number of lake trout in the lake is very near the historical levels
of abundance."
U.S. Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt trolled the waters off the
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore with anglers and dignitaries last
weekend during a catch-and-release fishing contest to mark the
occasion.
