A tiny, sightless, shrimp-like creature that may have survived the
last ice age in watery crevices deep under Fond du Lac County faces
a new threat with a road expansion project near Waupun.
The creature, called an amphipod, was discovered almost 90 years
ago in wells dug in Fond du Lac, Dodge and Green Lake counties.
Today, the only place in the world they are known to exist is 140
feet underground in an old well that is in the path of a planned
highway expansion near Waupun.
Fearing that construction activity as well as runoff from the
completed road could threaten the animals, biologists are asking
