Article: Green is Brewers' speedy choice Kentucky centerfielder showed Bando plenty; Baseball Draft Capsules Here is a look at the top 10 players selected in the first round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft: 1. Pittsburgh Pirates - Clemson RHP Kris Benson. One of the highest-rated college pitchers ever, the 6-foot-4 Benson walked just 22 and struck out 178 in 1412 3 innings while consistently reaching the mid-90s (mph) with his fastball. 2. Minnesota Twins San Diego State 1B Travis Lee. The best pure hitter in college ranks. Lee hit .355 with 14 homers and 60 RBI, and also runs well (33 stolen bases) for a big man (6-3, 200). 3. St. Louis Cardinals Wichita State RHP Braden Looper. A classic closer who notched 12 saves with 62 strikeouts in 54 innings. An unorthodox delivery and lanky 6-4 frame keep hitters off-balance. 4. Toronto Blue Jays Clemson RHP Billy Koch. The hardest thrower in the draft. Entering the season, he was considered the top college pitcher until his teammate, Benson, made huge strides. 5. Montreal Expos Orange, Texas (HS) RHP John Patterson. The scouts love his size (6-5, 185) and arm. Patterson throws in the low 90s (mph) and struck out at least 10 hitters in each of his first 10 starts this season. 6. Detroit Tigers Virginia RHP Seth Greisinger. Projected as a mid-round selection, Greisinger raised his stock by pitching the surprising Cavaliers to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title with two complete-game victories. 7. San Francisco Giants Waynesboro, Pa. (HS) RHP Matt White. One of the best high school pitchers to come along in years. If not represented by tough negotiator Scott Boras, the 6-5, 230-pound White would have gone perhaps as high as No. 1. 8. Milwaukee Brewers Kentucky OF Chad Green. The Brewers saw what Chuckie Carr's speed did for them in center field, which only increased their interest in Green. He needs to cut down on his swing and hit more ground balls. 9. Florida Marlins Cal State-Fullerton OF Mark Kotsay. The MVP of the 1995 College World Series, Kotsay (17 HRs, 77 RBI) fell off a bit this year. He's comparable to the Brewers' first-round pick in '95, USC outfielder Geoff Jenkins. 10. Oakland Athletics Mount Carmel, Calif. (HS) 3B Eric Chavez. The best pure hitter in the entire draft. With a short, compact stroke, he hits for average (.457) and power (9 HRs in first 81 ABs). The remaining first-round picks: 11. Philadelphia Phillies Snohomish (Wash.) HS RHP Adam Eaton. 12. Chicago White Sox Sarasota (Fla.) HS LHP Bobby Seay. 13. New York Mets San Marcos (Calif.) HS OF Robert Stratton. 14. Kansas City Royals Marlboro (N.Y.) HS OF Dermal Brown. 15. San Diego Padres Chancellor (Va.) HS SS Matt Halloran. 16. Toronto Blue Jays (from Baltimore) Barbe (La.) HS SS Joe Lawrence. 17. Chicago Cubs North Vermillion (La.) HS RHP Todd Noel. 18. Texas Rangers Tennessee RHP R.A. Dickey. 19. Houston Astros Hawaii RHP Mark Johnson. 20. New York Yankees (from California) Maryland LHP Eric Milton. 21. Colorado Rock

It took only one game for Milwaukee Brewers general manager Sal
Bando to understand why his scouts raved about Chad Green.
"He did everything in that game that you could ask," said Bando,
who watched the University of Kentucky centerfielder in action
recently in the Southeastern Conference tournament.
As expected, the Brewers selected Green with the eighth pick in
the first round of the June amateur draft Tuesday. Green learned of
his selection in Millington, Tenn., where he is trying out for the
U.S. Olympic team.
"I wasn't positive I would go to the Brewers, because sometimes
funny things happen in the draft, but I knew they were interested in
me," said Green, a 5-foot-10 switch hitter.
