Article: SCIENTIST EXTENDS DEBATE Warming study rejects catastrophic forecasts Temperature, greenhouse gas rises not correlated

The scientific squabble over global warming heated up again Wednesday with a Harvard astrophysicist's report that weather records provide "no evidence" of a coming climatic catastrophe.

"The buildup of greenhouse gases cannot be the cause of most of the global warming," Sallie Baliunas told a news conference Wednesday.

Her conclusion, in a study sponsored by the George C. Marshall Institute, was based on temperature records from 1880 to the present. They document a 1.1 degree increase worldwide. "Most of that rise occurred before 1940, while most of the greenhouse gases produced by human activities entered the atmosphere after 1940," Baliunas said.
