Article: U.S. mustn't neglect Liberia

Unlike many other countries, Liberia has a special claim on the conscience of Americans, especially African-Americans. Thus, the terrible conflict that has flared once again in Liberia deserves a prompt and effective response from the U.S. government as well as from Liberia's neighbors.

Liberia was founded in 1822 by freed U.S. slaves who named their new capital, Monrovia, in honor of President James Monroe. In 1989, a civil war broke out in Liberia and, while a peace agreement was signed last year, conflict erupted again in Monrovia last weekend.
